How the Pharmaceutical Film Coating Process Works

April 29, 2024

In the pharmaceutical industry, the journey from powder to tablet is intricate and multifaceted. While the active ingredients play a pivotal role in efficacy, the external presentation and protection of these medications are equally crucial. Enter film coating—a process that encapsulates tablets with a thin layer of protective film, enhancing not only their appearance but also their stability and overall performance.

What Is a Film Coating?

A film coating is a thin, uniform layer applied to solid oral dose medications to combine various properties such as protection from environmental factors, improved aesthetics, taste-masking, and controlled release of the active ingredient. This process transforms the elements of the tablet into a sophisticated pharmaceutical product, ready to meet the demands of both patients and regulatory bodies.

The Film Coating Process Unveiled

Here's a step-by-step breakdown of the film coating process.

Step 1: Formulation Preparation

The formulation of the coating is an art and a crucial aspect of the process. Ingredients such as film-forming polymers, plasticizers, pigments, and other additives are blended to achieve the desired characteristics, such as color, gloss, improved swallowability, moisture, and oxygen barrier.

Step 2: Coating solution preparation

The pre-formulated powder is simply added into water or solvent and after roughly 45 minutes of mixing, the coating solution is ready.

Step 3: Application of Coating

The coating process itself involves a series of precise steps:

  1. Loading: Tablets are loaded into a specialized coating machine, typically a pan coater or a fluidized bed coater.
  2. Spraying: The coating solution is sprayed onto the rotating tablets in the coating machine. The spraying process must be controlled to ensure uniform coverage and consistency across all tablets.
  3. Drying: After each spray cycle, the tablets are subjected to controlled airflow to facilitate drying. This step is crucial to prevent clumping and ensure the formation of a smooth, continuous film.

Step 4: Quality Control

Quality control measures are implemented throughout the coating process to ensure adherence to strict standards. Parameters such as coating thickness, uniformity, color, and texture are rigorously monitored to guarantee the consistency and efficacy of the final product.
